The 11% growth of UK vinyl sales to 5.3 million in 2021, according to the British Phonographic Industry, meant that they reached a peak last achieved in 1990. Meanwhile, in a further manifestation of the retro listening boom, sales of cassette tapes soared by 19%. The growth in streaming contracted from 22% in 2020 to 5.7% in 2021, admittedly from a very high base (the total number of songs streamed was 147 billion). These increased figures echo those from the US, where even CD sales rose by 2%. It all provides some much-needed good news for an industry where live performances have been so badly hit by the pandemic - a total of 159 million albums or their equivalent were sold in 2021.
