Doctor Dread, born Gary Himelfarb in 1954, first discovered reggae music in 1973, after listening to Bob Marley’s Catch A Fire and the Harder They Come soundtrack. After frequent trips to Jamaica, his love for reggae was cemented. Inspired by the people he met and the powerful roots of Jamaican culture, he resolved to bring Jamaican music to the world. Back in the States, he established a reputation as a DJ at WHFS, a major Washington DC radio station, where he earned the ‘Doctor Dread’ moniker, and where the songs of reggae greats like Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff and many lesser known artists first reached the airwaves. He founded RAS Records, which stands for Real Authentic Sounds, in 1980. The label eventually grew to include a who’s who roster of reggae artists, with Black Uhuru, Bunny Wailer, Gregory Isaacs, Inner Circle and Israel Vibration all releasing landmark albums.
